Plastic Pollution in India: Where the Problem Really Sits

The scale of it

India produces several million tonnes of plastic waste annually, and a significant share of it is single-use packaging that is handled once and discarded within minutes. Carry bags sit at the centre of that category because they are light, ubiquitous and rarely collected in a way that allows recycling.

Why collection alone will not solve it

Thin polythene has almost no scrap value, so it slips out of the informal recycling economy that handles bottles and rigid plastics. It ends up in drains, on riverbanks and in landfill, where it blocks water flow during monsoon and is regularly ingested by cattle.

Better collection helps, but the material itself has to change if the leakage is going to stop.

What a compostable alternative changes

A compostable bag that escapes collection still degrades. It does not persist for decades, does not shed microplastics into groundwater, and if composted properly it adds organic matter back to soil instead of subtracting from it.
